To find major companies in an industry, you'll want to view industry reports or summaries.

As a tip, keep in mind that different databases may refer to industries by different names. For example, if you are looking for information about the washing machine industry, it might be called home appliances, household appliances, or durable goods.

Plunkett Research Online

Contains information on businesses and industries.

  1. Click on Research an Industry.
  2. From here, you can:
    • Find your industry by running a Keyword search or searching by the NAIC Industry Code (see the NAICS website for more information); OR
    • Run a General Search using a phrase or company name.
  3. Select an Industry Analytics Report.
  4. Click on Industry Summary.
  5. There you will typically see a heading called Top U.S. Companies Operating Within This Industry Include.

Business Source Complete

Offers a wide variety of company and industry information, including industry profiles from MarketLine.

  1. You can use the Industry Profiles link to browse all the industries; OR
  2. Enter a keyword from your industry in the search box followed by AND "market share." For example, to search for an industry related to computers, search for computers AND "market share."
  3. Look for results that include MarketLine Industry Profile in the title.
  4. Once you've opened the PDF for the profile, look for a section called Leading Companies or Competitive Landscape.

Includes industry and market share reports, company financials, SWOT analysis, and case studies.

  1. On the Industries drop-down menu, select Market Share Reports.
  2. You can use the sidebar on the left to Search Within Results or limit your results to Full Text Only or by date range.
  3. You can also try searching the sidebar with the industry name and the phrase "top makers." For example: appliances and "top makers."
